Japan is full of koinobori (windsocks in the shape of carp) this time of year! These are flown to celebrate Children’s Day on May 5th. Why are they in the shape of carp? The carp is a strong and powerful fish and is highly regarded in Japan. They fly the koinobori in honor of their sons, so they might grow up strong. These were taken right here in Hagiwara/Gero!
